Varsity Centre dome expands fitness options on campus
Free student golf, expanded intramurals among highlights

Jan 11/08

As the dreary days of winter descend upon us, U of T’s exercise enthusiasts can find many options to stay fit at Varsity Centre, which recently went “indoors” thanks to the air-inflated dome over the field.

One of the highlights under the dome is a driving range, open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  U of T students can practice their golf swing free of charge, while Athletic Centre members pay just 35 cents per minute.  Non-members, including members of the general public, can also access the driving range for 40 cents per minute.

“Students at U of T are very lucky to have access to such a world-class facility,” says Dave Woods, head coach of the Varsity Blues golf team.  “We’ve used the dome to prepare for competition in the U.S. and it has made a huge difference in our level of play.”

The dome also greatly expands opportunities for U of T’s intramural teams, reducing waiting lists in sports such as indoor soccer. Fourth-year FPEH student and avid intramural sportsman Corey Anderson is inspired by the high-energy atmosphere at the facility. “It’s great to see the whole dome being used for intramural sports. It’s a very exciting environment to play in.”

In addition to activities under the dome, which is inflated from December to April each year, Varsity Arena offers free recreational skating for U of T students and Athletic Centre members.
