While many of us were relaxing at the cottage this summer, some of U of T’s top varsity athletes were sweating it out with some tough competition at events here at home, across the country and around the world.

U of T newcomer and national top hurdler Sarah Wells made a name for herself at the Canadian Junior Championships held in Vancouver this July, where she took gold in the 400m hurdles and bronze in 100m hurdles.

On June 19th Female Athlete of the Year Megan Brown won gold at the Mercedes Benz Classic one mile race.

Several Blues swimmers competed at the National Age Group Championships held July 19th —23rd in Montreal. Pat Cuch won the silver medal in the 200m freestyle, while Cam Cummings won gold in the 100m backstroke, silver in the 200m backstroke and  bronze medals in the 400 IM and the 50m backstroke.

Several Blues athletes qualified for the 2007 Summer Universiade held August 8th — 18th in Bangkok, Thailand. Top Blues soccer defenseman and two-time CIS Academic All-Canadian Eric Tse was one of only 19 men to represent Canada at the games. Blues pole vault champion Jason Wurster took fifth place, while Brown took sixth spot in the 1500m race.  Wells competed in the Junior portion of the games, placing fourth in the 400m hurdles.

Wells, Wurster and Brown also competed in July at the Canadian Senior Championships in Windsor. Wells leapt to victory, taking the gold medal in the 400m hurdles. Wurster’s vaulting skills earned him the gold, while Brown placed fourth in the 1500 metre. Pole Vaulter Sarah Boyle also took fourth at the same competition, and then went on to win gold at the Eastern Canada Espoir Meet in Newfoundland.

The Pan American Games, held this August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, also included some Blues talent. Cailie O’Hara and alumna Phillipa Kedgley (BPHE 0T4) represented Canada on the women’s field hockey team. Blues swimmer and CIS bronze medalist Terrence Haynes represented his native Barbados, competing in the men’s 100m freestyle race.

More than 15 current and former Varsity Blues players competed August 21-26th at the National Beach Volleyball Championships, held at Ashbridge’s Bay. Varsity Blues Heather Bansley and Dianne Burrows won gold in the 21U division. Teammates Carley McIntosh (PHE) and Caley Venn (Vic) placed fifth.
