Training Information for Casual Staff and Work-Study Students

As members of our part-time staff, you play an important role in delivering the faculty's programs and services to students, other members and the public in accordance with our Mission, Values and Guiding Principles. As a condition of employment you are required to attend the training outlined below. Casual staff will be paid the training rate of $11.65/hour for attending. Work-study students will be paid according to the work-study pay rate. Training will take place in the faculty's Athletic Centre - 55 Harbord Street, in the Benson Wing or Varsity Centre - 299 Bloor Street West.

FPEH Orientation - Required Training

The FPEH Staff Resource Guide and Activity Guide serve as an important introduction to the faculty's mission and values, policies and procedures, and other key job information. This online orientation must be completed by all casual staff and work-study students.

Accessibility Workshop - Required Training

UNDERSTANDING DISABILITIES: INCLUSIVE PRACTICES FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
This workshop is designed for FPEH casual staff to enhance understanding and skills to address barriers which DIS-ABLE persons with impairments. In this 3 hour workshop, you will learn about the disability models, language, myths, barriers, customer service, and social identities and their various forms of social inequities. You will also gain insight into the equity initiatives at U of T and FPEH. You will have the opportunity to apply your new knowledge to relevant case scenarios. All casual staff, work study and volunteers are required to attend this workshop.

Emergency Response (EAP) Training - Required Training

In an effort to ensure that staff becomes better acquainted with their environment, roles and our expectations in the event of an emergency, the Faculty has developed its own general emergency training workshops. The purpose of the training is to review the evacuation procedures, first aid scenarios and provide an introduction to the AED's that have been installed in the facilities.

All casual staff and work study students are required to attend one of these one hour presentations, while front line staff are also required to attend a second hour of hands on practice. Please note: this training is not a certificate course.

In-Service Training Day Keynote - Recommended Training

How to Deal with Difficult Behaviour

This session is designed to introduce staff to conflict resolution skills that can be used when confronted by a person who is displaying difficult behaviour.  Staff will learn about problem solving and listening techniques that de-escalate conflict and encourage understanding.   They will also receive information on services and resources that can help them deal with situations where there is a threat of physical violence and/or underlying mental health conditions.

Nancy Slamet is the Coordinator of Training and Organizational Services, at St. Stephen’s Conflict Resolution Service.

Attendance at the Keynote presentation is strongly recommended for all casual staff and work-study students.

Leadership Certificate Training Weekend- Optional Training

WINTER SESSION – LEADERSHIP IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND SPORT

Next Leadership Training Weekend:
January 22, 2010 - January 23, 2010

The Faculty’s Leadership Certificate is a training program available to all FPEH work-study students, casual staff and volunteers in the Faculty.  These free workshops will help you develop your personal skills, as well as your ability to more effectively work and lead in a physical activity environment. As student leaders continue to learn and develop in the Faculty during the school year, these sessions will further enhance their ability to become involved and make a contribution to the Faculty and the University of Toronto.

In these participatory workshops you will learn:

  • Strategies for diffusing tense situations and resolving conflicts
  • How to listen effectively and make people feel heard
  • Leadership capacities and goal setting for getting involved in the community
  • Ways to thoroughly and effectively plan an event
  • Techniques on how to deliver effective and meaningful presentations
  • Inclusive ways of providing leadership in physical activity settings
  • How to create effective teams through an understanding of group dynamics
  • Strategies to enhance public speaking skills
  • The governance structure in the Faculty and at U of T, along with how you may become involved as a student leader

Program Requirements:

    • Minimum of 10 hours of active participation
    • Open to all interested FPEH Work-Study students, casual staff BPHE students and FPEH volunteers.
    • Receive a FPEH Leadership Certificate upon completion
    • Limited registration – register by January 15th

    Leadership Certificate Training Weekend

    Sexual Diversity Workshops - Optional Training

    Sexual and Gender Diversity in Sport, Athletics & Recreation: A workshop for FPEH casual and appointed staff to expand their awareness of the intersections of sexual diversity and gender expression in learning and athletic environments. The workshop explores language, myths and stereotypes expanding participant's awareness, abilities and skills concerning barriers to participation. The workshop will provide a range of strategies to assist employees in making the athletic environment accessible and inclusive for all people. This optional training is open to interested casual staff and appointed staff, work-study students, BPHE students and FPEH volunteers.
