The Four Core Areas
The four-year interdisciplinary honours Bachelor of Physical and Health Education degree program addresses every aspect of physical activity and its relationship to health. The program is structured around four course areas: academic courses, physical activity courses, leadership placements and outdoor projects.
Academic Courses
The Faculty combines three areas of academic study - behavioural, sociocultural and biophysical - and offers a wide variety of courses including: health & sport psychology, sociology and philosophy of physical activity, exercise physiology, anatomy, biomechanics and sport medicine. Academic courses are taught by leading scholars and scientists whose passion for the study of health and physical activity is reflected in their enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring students.
Physical Activity Courses
What would a Bachelor of Physical & Health Education program be without physical activities? Our physical activity program is the most comprehensive in Canada and is designed to familiarize students with various forms of physical activity and to promote inclusive, enjoyable participation in physical activity.
Leadership Development
In years three and four, students may participate in leadership placement courses. Students are matched with mentors who include fitness professionals, teachers, physical therapists, researchers, sports marketers and promoters, drawn from U of T alumni, staff and other physical education and health leaders throughout Toronto. A full listing of our community partners for leadership placements is available in the FPEH Undergraduate Program Calendar.
Outdoor Projects
One of the first activities completed by students in the BPHE program is an Outdoor Project camp. The outdoor project curriculum emphasizes team building, leadership, skill development and environmental awareness in an outdoor setting. The first year camp usually takes place in last week of August.
A full description of these core areas, courses, and the program of study is available in the on-line FPEH Undergraduate Program Calendar.
Concurrent Teacher Education Program (CTEP)
The Concurrent Teacher Education Program, which started in September 2007, is offered in collaboration with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at UofT (OISE/UT).This five year program allows students to simultaneously complete BPHE and OISE/UT courses, including field experiences over a five-year period. Graduates finish with their professional qualifications for teaching at the intermediate/senior level and a Bachelors degree in Physical and Health Education.
