Research
The Faculty boasts renowned expertise in exercise physiology, health and exercise psychology, sport philosophy and sociology.
Key research areas include:
• Girls' and women's health and exercise issues
• Physical activity and psychological well-being
• Cardiovascular health
• Media coverage of sport and health
• Injury prevention and recovery
• Political and cultural studies of physical activity
Within a supportive and challenging setting, students are encouraged to work on original research projects and to present research at local and international conferences. Major undergraduate conferences at which BPHE professors and students regularly participate include the International Congress on Sport Science for Students, hosted by Summelweiss University in Budapest Hungary, and the Bertha Rosenstadt National Undergraduate Conference, hosted by the Faculty.
Leadership Development
In addition to the placement opportunities available as part of the program, students are encouraged to develop leadership skills by exploring paid work, placement and volunteer opportunities in fields related to their studies. Opportunities include: Camp U of T counselors, Varsity Blues student therapists or research assistants for one of the many studies undertaken by our professors.
Students can find a variety of leadership, work study and employment opportunities through the Center for Leadership Training and Education at the Faculty of Physical Education and Health. International Experiences
Students are encouraged to participate in international and Canadian exchanges offered through U of T's International Student Exchange Office and the Study Abroad Program.
These include universities in Australia, Austria, Barbados, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Isreal, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Trinidad, the United States and Wales. Financial assistance is available for some of these experiences.
The Faculty also offers summer placements to upper year students in Namibia in partnership with the U of T Centre for International Health's HIV/AIDS Initiative-Africa. Students in the placement engage in research surrounding the health of youth, particularly reproductive health, with particular attention to the impact of physical activity programs on the behaviour, attitudes, and knowledge of the youth.
