In 1997, Bruce received the North American Society of Sport History book prize for his The Struggle for Canadian Sport (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1996).

Other Activities
Throughout his career, Bruce has served on numerous international and Canadian advisory boards and commissions, including the National Advisory Council of Fitness and Amateur Sport, the Stadium Corporation of Ontario, the Toronto bid committees for the 1996 and 2008 Olympics, and the Advisory Committee on Canadian Sport Policy, Secretary of State (Amateur Sport).

He is currently a member of the Commonwealth Advisory Body on Sport, and Chair, International Development through Sport Committee, Commonwealth Games Canada, a program which assists development through sport in the developing Commonwealth countries in Africa and the Caribbean. Athletics
Member of the University of Toronto track and field organization since 1958. Won 18 national senior championships in Canada, the United States, and Britain and held numerous records, including four world junior records. Gold and bronze medalist at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. Member of the 1964 Olympic Team.

United Nations Committee Against Apartheid, special citation for "his valuable contribution as a sports person to the campaign for the elimination of apartheid and the establishment of a non- racial and democratic society in South Africa," Paris, 1985

In 1997, the Canadian Sports Awards created the Bruce Kidd Trophy to honour an outstanding national team athlete who has given significant leadership to sports

International Olympic Committee, Education and Sport Award, 2001

In 2004, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada

In 2005, he received the Canadian Olympic Order and a lifetime achievement award from the North American Society of Sport History. In 2006, he was given a lifetime achievement award from the Commonwealth Sports Foundation.
