About Camp

Summer Camps are offered June 30 - August 15, 2008 for children and youth 4-18. We offer over 25 Sports, Leadership and Mini-University camps for campers to choose from.

This is going to be a very exciting summer at Camp U of T! The big news is the completion of Phase 1 of the Varsity Centre, a tremendous new venue for some of our camp programs and activities that includes the John L. Davenport track, a state-of-the-art artificial turf field and an air-supported dome over the field for winter use. The new facility will be home to many camps in 2008, including lacrosse, field hockey, track and field, soccer and girls-only sports.

As part of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Physical Education and Health (FPEH), Camp U of T boasts a quality of instruction unmatched by other camp programs. Our sport instructors include senior FPEH students, coaches and members of U of T’s intercollegiate teams. Our Mini-University instructors are senior undergraduate or graduate instructors in the field of study in which they are instructing. All of our staff members are committed to providing campers with the experience of a lifetime.

Camp U of T offers a safe, fun and inclusive environment that gives campers a broad range of experiences and opportunities to try new things, make new friends and learn new ways to enjoy sport, recreation and play.

A Teaching Health Centre
The Faculty of Physical Education and Health is a teaching health centre, where research and academic teaching about physical activity are conducted alongside the co-curricular programs. Many of the instructors and staff are students, learning about the science of physical activity as they practice and perform their tasks. From time to time, participants may be asked to be subjects in research; participation in research is entirely voluntary. We ask all participants, parents and guardians to be respectful of the learning environment.

Swimming
The swimming portion of Camp U of T is very important to our campers and parents. Some sport and adventure camps feature daily swimming. Others swim once or twice a week. Mini-University modules alternate physical activity days with swim days. Campers are supervised at all times by their counsellors and certified lifeguards while swimming. Minisport does not swim. To swim in deep water, all participants must complete a swim assessment consisting of jumping into deep water and submerging, then a 25-metre front swim, followed by one minute of treading water. For participants who choose not to attempt the swim assessment or who do not complete the assessment, the 3-foot-deep teach pool may be available. Participants who swim in any pool other than the teach pool will be given a wrist band marking which pool they swim in. Please leave the wrist band on for the entire camp session.

Age Guidelines
Age guidelines for Camp U of T programs have been set to be appropriate for the developmental stage of the child, the facility in which the program is held and the program goals. Your child’s safety and enjoyment of our programs are of paramount importance to us and we ask that all parents and guardians adhere to these age guidelines.

For programs for 4 year olds, the child must be the appropriate age by the date of the first class.

For programs for ages 5 and over, the participant must be the appropriate age during the program.

If your child is too young to participate this year we look forward to seeing him/her in our programs next year!

If you would like to enroll your older child in a program that is set for younger children, please contact us to discuss the specifics.

Other Information

Allergies
Allergies – particularly severe allergies to nuts – have become an increasing problem for all programs. Please do not send any snacks containing nut products with your child. Help to keep all kids safe!

If your child has allergies or another medical condition that we should be aware of, please indicate the details when registering. Please speak with the instructor about any conditions that could have an impact on your child’s experience.

In the event of an emergency we will make every attempt to contact the parent(s) or guardian(s) listed on the account. Please keep the contact information, home phone, cell phone or work phone current on your Family Account. If you need to update any information call the Main Office at 416-978-3436. Only if we are unable to reach the parents or guardians will we contact the person listed as the Alternate Emergency Contact.

Equipment
Please do not bring expensive equipment such as MP3 players or Gameboys to camp. Make sure all clothing and towels are labelled, and we’ll do our best to return them to your camper!

English Skills
To make sure your camper is able to fully enjoy Camp U of T, please ensure he or she can speak enough English to understand instructors and other campers.

Lunch
Camp U of T offers a hot lunch service through the New College cafeteria. The cost is $46 for a five-day week, or $37 for a four-day week. Single lunches are available from the camp desk. Please be advised that the cafeteria is not nut free.
