Graduate Studies in Exercise Sciences

The Graduate Department of Exercise Sciences offers the Faculty’s graduate programs. Students can pursue the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in one of the following specializations:

  • applied/exercise/environmental physiology
  • metabolic and endocrinological aspects of physical activity
  • muscle physiology and biochemistry
  • physical fitness
  • psychological aspects of sport and physical activity
  • psychophysiology of exercise and stress
  • socio-cultural aspects of physical activity

Established in 1964 as the Graduate Program in Applied Physiology in the School of Hygiene, it is one of the oldest programs of its kind in Canada. Its graduates can now be found in universities, research institutes and government offices around the world. Admission to the M.Sc. program depends upon performance in each of the four undergraduate years. Candidates should complete a four year honours degree in physical and health education or a related discipline with an average of B+ or better. Admission to the Ph.D. program is contingent upon successful completion of a research-based master’s degree and availability of a suitable supervisor.

Application forms are available. For further details contact the Graduate Program Administrator at (416) 978-6087, or by e-mail at exs.fpeh@utoronto.ca. It is advisable for students to apply early in their final year, both for acceptance into graduate programs and for any financial assistance that may be required.
