In addition, PhD students must successfully complete an oral and written comprehensive examination.
The Faculty is located at the heart of the university's St. George campus. Students enjoy the unequalled advantages of Canada's pre-eminent research university combined with the intimate environment of a graduate department with a population of approximately 50 students, and 40 full-time and adjunct faculty. Students within the Faculty also benefit from the University of Toronto's strong commitment to student financial aid through access to our scholarships and bursary program, the largest of its kind in Canada.
Highlights of Our Program
FlexibilityOur graduate programs allow students to combine course work with research and thesis requirements in a uniquely self-selected tailor-made program that meets both an individual's educational and career goals.
Breadth of study
Research areas span the behavioural, biophysical and sociocultural perspectives encompassing biochemistry, gender studies, history, molecular biology, philosophy, physiology, psychology and sociology. Students often decide to adopt a multidisciplinary approach in their research, an option that is facilitated by the depth of knowledge and variety of interests held by our faculty.
Career preparation
We are committed to the development of well trained individuals who think creatively, are able to evaluate critically both their own work and that of others, and are capable of conducting independent research and scholarship at the forefront of their chosen field.
We prepare graduates for careers as research scientists, public policy analysts, teachers, and college and university faculty. Our students are interested in health (the state of complete physical, psychological and social well being) and its interaction with physical activity.
